WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects an individual in the areas of social interaction and communication, typically appearing during the first three years of life. Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects each individual differently and to varying degrees of severity. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

THE PURPOSE OF OUR RESEARCH STUDY

The purpose of this research study is to investigate musical pitch (sound) perception in people with autistic spectrum disorders and their parents. The investigator will focus on the ability of the participant to memorize and identify musical sounds. The ultimate goal of the study is to identify the gene or genes that may be linked to autism and certain musical abilities. Your participation is a vitally important part of our efforts.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

If you are an adult that has been diagnosed with autism or an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) or have a child with autism or an ASD you may be eligible to participate.

Autistic spectrum disorders may include Asperger’s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD), Rett’s Disorder, and PDD_Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

Qualified individuals should have at least one living biological parent that is willing to participate. If you have a child diagnosed with autism or an ASD, you and/or your spouse/partner should also be willing to participate.

No prior musical training is needed to participate in this study. All information that we collect is kept strictly confidential.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Participation is simple and easy. All participation is conducted by mail, the Internet and over the telephone. There will be no cost to you to participate. You will be asked to complete a brief telephone interview and provide a cheek cell sample. You will also be asked to play two (2), ten-minute games online at a secure website. The game is played on your own time from any computer with Internet access.
